British Association for Women in Policing

Susan Thomson

Committee Member

Susan joined Thames Valley Police in 1981 as a police cadet and as an officer in 1983.  She was initially posted to High Wycombe but early in her career joined the firearms team as a protection officer.  In 1991, she became the first female Public Order Instructor in TVP and became a specialist in teaching self-defence, riot tactics and evidence gathering.  She became a Silver Tactical Advisor, advising officers up to the rank of ACPO in policing protest and significant public disorder.  This included being deployed in the frontline at EDL Demonstrations, environmental protests and the Luton riots.  She remained at the forefront of operational policing for her entire service serving as both Sergeant and Acting Inspector on the Tactical Operations Team.  During her service Susan received four Chief Constable's Commendations and the Shrievalty Merit Award from the High Sheriffs Office.  Susan was also an inaugural member of the Thames Valley Women's Network, having served firstly as Treasurer, then Vice Chair and finally Chair in her final three years of service.  Susan retired from the Police Service in 2014 to commence a degree course in Midwifery which she hopes to complete in the Summer of 2017.  She is still a committed member of the BAWP Executive and the Thames Valley Women's Network and is hoping to forge new links between the policing family and the NHS in the future.
